We entered into a deep discussion of how fathers react to emotion. AHONU read from his book "The Reincarnation of Columbus", a book about the impact of emotions on him as a father, and how his inability to cry led to a difficult crossing of the turbulent waters of grief. On this Father's Day special, Aingeal Rose & AHONU ask, "Are men incapable of crying?"
The Origin of Fathers Day
Father's Day in the United States is on the third Sunday of June. It celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives. There are several things that may have inspired the idea of Father's Day. One of these was the start of the Mother's Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.
What Happens On Fathers Day?
Father's Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life. Of course, we also honor all of the 'father' figures like step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and even other male relatives.
Is Fathers Day celebrated all round the World?
The date when Father’s Day is celebrated varies from country to country. It is celebrated in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States on the third Sunday of June. It is also observed in countries such as Argentina, Canada, France, Greece, India, Ireland, Mexico, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, and Venezuela. In Australia and New Zealand Father’s Day is on the first Sunday in September. In Thailand it is celebrated on December 5, which is the birthday of the country’s king. Brazilian dads are honored on the second Sunday of August. In Mexico Father’s Day is referred to as “Día del Padre”, where many families get together, prepare meals and distribute gifts to fathers or father figures. In South Africa, many social and cultural societies host Father's Day celebrations to stress the important role of fathers in nurturing children and building stronger society. On this day WE celebrate fathers all over the world. We wish you and yours, a wonderful and happy Father's Day.
